01 / The label

What does the condition label tell you?

Read the label, then the full description. Condition names depend on the marketplace and category.

The examples below summarize eBay's US consumer-electronics guidance. The named refurbishment program is a particular program, not a promise attached to every use of the word “refurbished.”

Keep appearance and usefulness separate.

A clean exterior will not answer whether a laptop has the memory you need, a camera includes a battery or a console comes with a controller. Record those facts separately. If two listings use different grade names, compare their descriptions and photos rather than translating one label into the other.

Three things to find in the listing.

  1. The exact model and configuration. The product-family name alone can leave important differences unresolved.
  2. The item's specific condition. Look for described marks, known defects and what the photos actually show.
  3. The written terms. Check warranty provider, exclusions, return window and included accessories.

If a fact is missing, keep it marked unknown in your comparison until the seller or current terms establish it.
